On the walk back to River Bend, I spotted a black Dodge Ramâthe same make and model that had blown by Eliâs several timesâparked along the commons. Its owner was nowhere to be found. I was eighty percent sure it was the truck that stalked the farm, attempting to frighten or intimidate. I looked over my shoulder to double-check that I was alone. Then I investigated.
The door was locked. An empty gun rack hung in the back window, a Stewartâs Shop coffee cup sat in the center console, and a newspaper was folded up on the passengerâs seat. In the bed of the truck, under a packing blanket, I saw a small round gas can, a shovel, and a chain.
My fingers buzzed with the desire to break the window, dig out the registration, and ID the son of a bitch. Instead, I hung back at the gazebo on the commons and waited. I was determined to match a face to the vehicle, even if I had to sit there for hours.
Ten, fifteen minutes later, a man twice my age swaggered up to the truck. Despite the summer heat, he wore a long-sleeve green plaid shirt, a full beard, a worn-out John Deere hat. Even though I got a decent look at him (from a hundred feet away), I couldnât make out any distinguishing features. He resembled a lot of men in Galesville; in some ways, he even reminded me of Eli.
He popped open the truckâs door, but before he stepped into its cab, he fixed his stare across the commons and firmly on me. I tipped my head in his direction, but he didnât return the gesture. Iâd been made. His stare intensified, but I didnât look away. After what felt like a full minute of this, he flipped me off, got in the truck, and drove away.
